Built in May 1934, taking about nine years to complete, it is one of the largest dams in India and also in Tamil Nadu. This dam is located across the river Kaveri receiving inflows from Kabini Dam and Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Karnataka.
Mettur Dam provides drinking water facilities to about 12 districts of Tamil Nadu and hence has been regarded as life and livelihood-giving asset of Tamil Nadu.
